Research

We combine basic research on microorganisms with translational research and industrial valorization

We study prokaryotic and eukaryotic biology, ecology, genetics, genomics, metabolism, and pathology. We use these insights to create superior industrial microbes and microbial products, and to develop new ways to fight resistant pathogenic microbes.

Developing drugs with the help of bacteria

We study how bacteria in search for microbial natural products with potential pharmaceutical applications, such as antibiotics, antifungals, immunosuppressants, anticancer agents and other bioactive metabolites. By elucidating how such compounds are assembled, we can engineer microbes to develop better drugs.

Gut flora project

The Flemish Gut Flora Project

The functioning of the human body constitutes a complex interplay of human processes and “services” rendered to us by the 1,000 trillion microbial cells we carry. We have collected faecal samples of thousands of volunteers across Flanders to study the impact of gut flora on our health.

The science of brewing

Belgian beer book

Tasty microbial life

We wrote the first fact-based atlas of Belgian beers, uncovering how every beer compares to others and allowing readers to understand and explore the marvellous world of Belgian beer. Dive into this unique book to discover new beers aligning with your own personal preferences.

Want to dig even deeper?

Check out our free MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) on “The science of brewing”. In 10 modules, you'll learn how the ingredients, different biochemical reactions and process parameters in beer brewing influence the taste and aroma of beer.
